The Curtain Goes Up

Uncle Tom's Cabin

The curtain goes up at 7:00 P.M., October 3,4,10 and 11, at the Grand Lodge Arts Center, Modale, for Uncle Tom's Cabin (U.T.C.), a historic drama made possible by a major grant from Humanities Iowa and The National Endowment for the Humanities. The play is based on Harriet Beecher Stowe's book, Uncle Tom's Cabin, although she never received credit for it. Abraham Lincoln, however, recognized Stowe as the motivation for the Civil War.

U.T.C. is the story of a trusted slave, Uncle Tom, whose faith carries him through good times when he is owned by St. Clair and is Little Eva's companion, and through bad times and his death after being sold to Simon Legree. Interwoven is the story of Little Eva and Topsy and Eliza escaping with her young son as she crosses the treacherous ice-laden river.

Director Dave Podendorf, Council Bluffs, announces cast members, as follows: Derrick Crawford, Chuck Griesel, Sarah Bryceson, Bill McAlpine, Echelle Childers, Tyler and Kristina Pendland, Stephen Tallon, Rick Dilley, James Wright, Andrea Brooks and Claire and Ben Hennessy.

Reservations are required and may be made online here, or by calling 712/647-2239 or 712/645-2531. Area folks will also want to see the parade that travels Modale's Main Street each production day, at 5:00 P.M., October 3 and 10 and 1:00 P.M., October 4 and 11. The cast, in costume, will parade as will the Missouri Valley High School Band, the Condors Drum Corps, Charlie Wisecup with vintage farm equipment and others. Makeup of parade personnel will vary each day.
